The Atari 2600, released in 1977, was one of the earliest video game consoles available on the consumer market. Until that time, it was certainly the most successful. The console was responsible for the rise of home video gaming as Atari offered a game-playing experience beyond Pong. It was almost completely responsible for the crash of home video gaming with the tragically rushed and unsuccessful E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial title. With over 400 officially-released titles, it’s difficult to choose a top 10, but these are my picks for the best Atari 2600 games ever released.
As a bonus, you’ll find the originally-aired television commercials for these games here, too!
1. Pitfall! (1982)
Not only was this game incredibly awesome, it was the second best seller of all Atari 2600 games (right behind Pac-Man, which was terrible). Unlike many games of the period, Pitfall! could actually be finished if all 32 treasures were collected within a 20 minute time limit.
