Every morning at 4:00 AM, five elderly Chinese women wake up to spend their day caring for over 1,300 stray dogs. They prepare around 880 pounds (400 kg) of food daily. 60-year old Wang Yanfang established the “dog asylum” in 2009 and, with the help of four friends, have been spending non-stop time with the animals. A few bites and scrapes aside, Yanfang says, “They’re like your children, you can’t bear to be apart from them, or to lose them.” Their operation is funded completely by the kind-hearted donations of their community.
